Frequently Asked Questions
The MacBook Repair Process
We are an independent store and not Apple affiliated in any way – this is the reason we are able to provide repairs for a reasonable price, as we are able to perform repairs that Apple don’t permit their providers to do – LCD only screen repair, logic board repair, keyboard replacement, and so on. This is also why our screen repairs are cheaper – because we only repair what is necessary, and we do not replace the entire display assembly, just the broken panel!
If your Mac needs any of the following – keyboard, trackpad, battery, then Apple replace the entire top palmrest, including all 3 of these components and the aluminium chassis, which is wasteful and drives up the cost for customers. By being an independent repair store, we are able to pass on these savings to our customers and provide a higher quality of repair.
Yes, as we must remove the bottom cover of your MacBook to replace the display, we will also clean the insides of all dust and contaminates using high pressure air at no extra cost, in order to restore thermal performance and improve cooling.
If you would also like your thermal compound replaced, this can be done for an additional fee (please contact us and ask first)
Adding a Guest account is the best option to allow us to fully test the display after repair, whilst maintaining data security.
Enabling your Mac’s Guest Account is recommended to allow us to thoroughly test your Mac post repair. This won’t allow us access to any of your information/data which is encrypted, but allows us to test the display performance and quality, to ensure it meets our standards. Simply Open System Preferences, and select Users and Groups, select Guest User, and tick the box for “Allow guests to log in to this computer”.
We are approved and trusted by Bournemouth University, Arts University Bournemouth and Bournemouth & Poole College – IT services at all 3 universities direct students and staff to us for repairs, as well as having our flyers and posters on display.
We are a VAT registered Limited company, having been in business since 2010, and we have been located on Bournemouth High Street since 2013 – you can rest assured your Mac will be in good hands, and our excellent reviews are testament to our service. We have repaired thousands of Apple Macs in over a decade of business – as Mac users ourselves, we understand that premium products call for a premium standard of repair by qualified, experienced technicians that understand the level of engineering within. We never outsource, all repairs are done by our own staff, within our own store.
All your information is handled in accordance with GDPR and the Data Protection Act – we have no access to any of your information/data on your Mac during the repair – it is physically impossible without your password. To permit us to test your Mac post-repair, we ask you enable a guest account which provides us with no access to any of your data, only a Safari browser window.
We offer a 12 Month Warranty that covers the replacement screen and our workmanship – as opposed to the 90 days Apple offers with repairs. We only replace the LCD which means you keep True Tone functionality, Auto Brightness, and the original Apple lid (hinges, chassis, camera, sensors).
We re-invest our profits into our service to offer customers the best repairs possible – we possess tools you will not find in an Apple Store; namely thermal cameras, high end microscopes, soldering stations, schematic software and our latest investment is a medical grade laminar flow hood to prevent dust ingress from ambient surroundings whilst repairing your screen.
Security wise, our building is protected by 4K CCTV cameras, recording both video and audio 24/7/365. Our property is alarmed (door sensors, glass break detectors, motion sensors) with remote alarm monitoring, and both CCTV and alarm status can be checked remotely, so our staff can respond and attend the address in minutes in the event of an alarm activation. Our shop is half a mile away from the Police station, allowing a 2 minute response time.
See our About us page for more.
We provide all types of repairs for Apple MacBooks, simply select either Screen Repair, or general Mac Repair from our ‘Nationwide’ button up top.
All prices are listed on our website, and for screens, the total cost is listed above so you know exactly what you are paying. If you have issues other than a screen, please contact us and we would be happy to provide an indication of cost.
We do not require any deposit or upfront payment.
After you make a booking for your repair, package your Mac safely in a plain box, wrapped in bubble wrap, and Royal Mail will collect on your chosen day – they will bring the label with them. Alternatively, please let us know if you would prefer to drop it off to a Post Office yourself. As the label contains your details, there is no need to put anything in the box other than your Mac. Please do not send any accessories.
We replace just the LCD/Liquid crystal display, and preserve the remainder of the top assembly. This is a more cost effective and environmentally friendly repair, reducing e-waste and achieving a better display quality than third party displays offer. In most cases our screens are very similar to the original screen, in particular for the newer models we have not found a discernible difference.
The resolution/pixel density is identical to the original Apple display, it is not possible to get lower resolution screens – on other words, our screens are ‘Retina displays’.
This means by choosing us, you will keep your original, genuine Apple aluminium chassis, hinges, FaceTime camera, ambient light sensor, and the backlight LEDs & diffusion sheets. This means colours, brightness, camera, and overall build quality is at a far higher level than a third party display, which is the only other option available to independent repair stores.
By refurbishing your existing display, there are the following advantages:
- Genuine hinges are better quality, being tighter which means they do not feel loose or being floppy over time.
- The Apple backlight has higher quality LED’s which possess a higher ‘CRI’ or Colour Rendering Index, as well as better quality backlight sheets, so colours are more accurately represented.
- Preserves the original FaceTime camera and Ambient Light Sensor – third-party screens have worse quality cameras, which can appear more grainy, and the ambient light sensors can be mis-calibrated, meaning your screen brightness won’t adjust properly.
- Pricing – for some models, the cost can be as low as half what Apple charge.
There aren’t many downsides, other than:
- If your aluminium chassis is damaged in any way, the damage will remain, as we are not replacing the chassis. If there is warping or any bends, we can replace the chassis with a second hand genuine one, but this is not available for all models.
- If your display is liquid damaged, the cost will go up, as we also need to replace the backlight sheets at minimum, and possibly the LEDs themselves if they have become corroded due to liquid.
Once your Mac arrives at our store, Royal Mail will email you a confirmation, so you know it has arrived with us. Your Mac will be booked in, tested, and then repaired (please check the top of the page for an up to date average turnaround time). After repair, it is tested again to ensure everything works as it should.
After the repair is complete, you will receive an email to pay the total cost of repair as listed on our website through Stripe (a PayPal company). After payment is received, your Mac is safely packaged, and then returned to you, again with Royal Mail Special Delivery. You will receive an email and SMS from Royal Mail on the day of delivery.
If you are unsure whether you have any damage other than to your screen, please contact us (Email or WhatsApp) with photos of your screen and top lid so we can assess the damage.
- If your bezel (the black strip beneath the display) is cracked and requires replacement, this incurs an additional £20 fee – we do not stock bezels for all models, so this may cause a delay.
If you have any warping or damage to your display chassis/lid, please note:
- 13″ MacBook Pro / Air M1 – If any part of your top assembly (i.e. Backlight, Aluminium top lid), other than the LCD screen itself is damaged (excluding superficial damage such as scratches or scrapes), then your screen is still repairable, but for an additional £49 charge for the replacement top assembly/chassis. If this is applicable, a member of staff will contact you first.
- 14″/16″ MacBook Pro & MacBook Air M2 – If any part of your top assembly (i.e. Backlight, Aluminium top lid), other than the LCD screen itself is damaged (excluding superficial damage such as scratches or scrapes), then your screen is still repairable, but we must replace the entire top lid/display assembly (we will source a new genuine display from Apple). If this is applicable, a member of staff will contact you first.
There are two chips/ICs that are programmed to the screen, these are soldered to the display board, which is hidden behind the LCD panel.
- The 16″ model does not require calibration, it will have no shadows on the display.
- The 14″ model requires the chip moved across, otherwise you will have shadows. We offer two rates of service, with the calibration we charge an additional £100 as listed above.
Pricing
No – the price you see is the price you pay in total, all costs include VAT, Labour, Parts, Insured Collection & Delivery and Warranty. The only time the cost would be higher is if:
- Your display is liquid damaged, and thus needs either a new backlight, backlight sheets or FaceTime camera.
- Your chassis is bent/warped meaning the new screen cannot be fitted correctly. (Please see ‘What if my lid is damaged or dented?’ under the Repair Process category above.
Unfortunately not – without seeing your Mac, we cannot provide a formal quote, as we can only quote for what damage you have disclosed. The price on our website is fixed (assuming you do not have liquid damage, warping/bends/severe dents to your top lid, as this would cost £49 extra for most models), or a broken bezel (£20 extra).
After making payment you will receive a receipt that you can submit to claim back the cost of repair on insurance, or through your employer etcetera. The onus is on you to check that you can claim back the cost, as your insurance company may or may not cover it.
Unfortunately we do not offer any financing options. Payment is due once the Mac is repaired, before it is posted. If payment is not received, we cannot post your Mac.
Our MacBook screen replacement are fixed cost, with all prices listed above. Repair starts from £239 and is on average 40-50% cheaper than Apple.
We replace JUST the LCD (liquid crystal display) that is actually cracked, and leave the other components that are unaffected by a damaged screen (hinges, backlight, iSight camera, ambient light sensor). This allows us to keep our prices low, whilst providing a high quality of repair. This is especially important for the newer Mini LED models as it preserves the original Apple backlight allowing for a high quality image. It also means the aluminium chassis and hinges are genuine Apple; third party hinges tend to either be too loose or stiff.
We continuously monitor the pricing of our competitors to ensure we charge below the average market cost, to provide value for money for our customers. Despite being better value and cheaper than most providers, the quality of display repair is also significantly higher than third party displays.
Traditionally, the entire top/display assembly would be replaced if you broke your screen. This is much like replacing an entire wheel, instead of the tyre when having a puncture.
We replace only the bit you’ve broken – the LCD screen. By not replacing unnecessary parts, we are able to offer a cheap MacBook screen repair, whilst not sacrificing the quality of the screen.
This type of repair also means we don’t replace your camera, sensors and hinges with a lower quality third party option.
We regularly compare our prices to competitors, and we believe we offer some of the best prices in the UK for Mac screen replacement.
Collection, Delivery & Insurance
Royal Mail are one of, if not the best postal service in the UK – when selecting a courier to use for our nationwide service, price was not a concern, only reliability and convenience for our customers.
We have never had a package lost, stolen or damaged in transit whilst using Royal Mail, and so we are pleased to select them for our repair service.
Nevertheless, we use their Special Delivery by 1pm service, which is insured to £1000 – for extra coverage, you can also select £2500 total coverage for £10 extra. The box you send your Mac in must not reveal the contents, as this voids the insurance.
You will receive both an email and SMS on the day of delivery, normally with a time slot, so you can rest assured your Mac will be just as safe as if you were walking into our store.
As Royal Mail do not bring packaging, you will need to safely package your Mac. Use a plain cardboard box, ensure there is nothing to suggest there is a Mac inside (for insurance purposes, this is a request from Royal Mail themselves). Use a few cm of bubblewrap each side, so that if you close the box and shake it, there is no movement inside – if there is movement, add more bubble wrap, so it does not get damaged during shipping. The limit for the box is 450mm x 350mm x 160mm, and 2KG in total, which should cover all models of MacBook (but this is dependant on the box you select).
In summary, you will need a cardboard box, bubble wrap, and sellotape – no need for a label, as your postie will bring one on your chosen collection day.
How will I know when my Mac has arrived at your store, and when it will arrive back at my address?
Once your Mac arrives at our store, Royal Mail will email you a confirmation of delivery with a photo and GPS coordinates/map. Once your Mac is due to arrive back to your address, you will receive an email from Royal Mail on the day of delivery.
We normally post Macs on the same working day after receiving payment.
Contact us – we can send you a cardboard box, with sufficient bubble wrap to surround your Mac, all you will need is parcel tape/sellotape to seal the box. No label is required as your postie will bring one on your chosen collection day. This will come at no additional charge to yourself.
Your Mac will be collected by Royal Mail and posted to our shop address at 117 Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, BH1 1EP. On arrival, a member of staff will inspect your Mac, to ensure there are no bends or warping to the display assembly that would hinder the repair. The serial number and Mac details are recorded against your name and contact details to ensure we have a chain of custody for your MacBook, and your Mac is placed in a marked box, ready to be repaired.
Your Mac will be repaired on-site – we never outsource, before being posted back to your home address that it was initially collected from.
Our building is protected by 4K CCTV cameras equipped with night vision, recording both video and audio 24/7/365. Our shop is ADT alarmed (door sensors, glass break detectors, motion sensors) with Police response, and both CCTV and alarm status can be checked remotely, so our staff can respond and attend the address in minutes in the event of an alarm activation – every alarm activation is thoroughly vetted by checking our CCTV as well as audio feed, and attending in the first instance to ensure there is no break-in. Our shop is half a mile away from Bournemouth Police station staffed by response officers, so you can rest assured your Mac is safe and sound.
Warranty
We offer a 12 month warranty on all repairs – the warranty covers the repaired component only, and not the entire device. We do not remove any components (other than the back cover and Wi-Fi antenna) to access the display. Therefore the warranty does not cover any component other than the display.
We do not cover any accidental damage, as the warranty is not equivalent to insurance.
If your screen stops working within 12 months of our repair, please contact our team in the first instance. With Mac Screens, we ask you send a clear photo of the entire display, to verify there is no damage. If there are no obvious cracks to the screen, then we can arrange for a collection on your preferred day.
Once your Mac arrives at our store, we inspect it to verify there is no damage or cracks. In cases of screen replacement, this can include removing the LCD to make sure there are no cracks around the very edge of the screen, beneath the black bezel area.
Cracks:
There has been recent media coverage of consumers claiming their MacBook screens have cracked by themselves – it is physically impossible for a screen to crack by itself. A screen crack is always the result of physical pressure applied to the display. We use panels direct from LG and Sharp that are no weaker than your Mac screen will have been before it broke; in other words our screens are no more susceptible to damage than your original display would have been.
If you have a crack on your display, this will unfortunately render your warranty void as it is not equivalent to insurance.
We highly recommend against any cases, screen protectors, keyboard covers, camera covers as we have had numerous Macs sent in with broken screens, as a result of these.
If you are unsure whether you have any damage other than to your screen, please contact us (Email or WhatsApp) with photos of your screen and top lid so we can assess the damage.
- If your bezel (the black strip beneath the display) is cracked and requires replacement, this incurs an additional £20 fee
